Jake Wiley
"Whao... Soothed Jake, allowing the sleek arabian cross beneath him to settle into a swift trot. Sam said she could see the potential in Bullet, that the sleek, silver dappled horse had a real chance in the racing buisness. Jake didn't. A silver Bullet, or Bullet as he was known on the Wiley ranch, was the most unpredictable, agressive instigator he'd ever seen, and of all the horses he had to work with, it was the three year old beneath him he disliked the most. "Hey! Relax!" He commanded once more as the unruly male gave a sudden buck beneath him, almost dislodging Jake from his seat. It was safe to say he was in a less than pleasent mood, after all, here he was at the track, and he wasn't even a racer, or in charge of the racers for that matter! Jake was to tall, to muscular, too big to race properly, so why Sam had insisted he take Bullet to the track for a work out was beyond his grasp. Hell, fromt he looks of it, Bullet wasn't to fond of him either.
Cut it out Bullet! Growled Jake as the spunky young male twisted his head around to bite at the reigns, attempting to wrench them from thier riders hands.Usually Jake had no time with these types of horses, but Bullet was a special case, and so the boy had to take some form of pity on him. Bullet was sired from a long line of champion racers, so it would be safe to assume the energy level of the expected foal would be a lot, but this was an understatment. Bullet had needed a specialized work out scheduale, one in which his excess energy could be burned, a scheduale that his other owners did not try to follow. Because of the neglect of not being able to move freely enough through out the day, the young horse had developed temperment problems that had landed him in some serious trouble. Sam was hell bent on rehabilitating him, and so far, they seamed to work for each other. Bullet just hated the rest of the world, or at least thats how Jake saw it. Sam was able to connect to most horses, it was her 'gift', understanding animal behavior and all that. Chris, Samanthas brother, did most of the competing, though Sam herself would step in now and then as well. As for Jake, well, he did none of that. He'd been shipped out here by his mom after Sam and Chris' parents had died to help them manage the ranch. His determination and firm hand made him a natural when it came to catching and breaking wild horses, perhaps his biggest use yet. Chris wasn't patient enough to stake out wild horses, and Sam couldn't stand thinking about a terrified, squeeling horse, so it was only natural the job would be left to him. Yup, the catcher, the trainer, and the showman, what a bunch.
"Alright fine, your workout's done anyway." Jake said in a gruff voice, allowing his toned body to slide down from the crossbreeds backside, who hastily stepped away, leaving Jake to struggle with his foot still half int he stirrup. "Damn it Bullet, why do you have to do this all the time?!" He growled as he pulled his foot free, glaring back at the horse who was staring him down."You need a real attitude adjustment you know that? You better hope Sam can help you or it's 'bye-bye racehorse', off to the glue factory." His brow furrowed as he watched the horse, knowing all too well that Sam would never send a horse to the slaughter house, not even over her dead body, and if she knew he'd just said that, he would have gotten a good smack upside the head."Come on, i'll take your tack off, cool you down, and turn you out." The local Arena were also provided by the Wiley Ranch, and thus were located right on the property, even though they were open to public. The ranch had it's own indoor rings, but unfortunatley no track.
As Jake led the silver dappled horse off to the side of the track, he couldn't help but think of how boring things had gotten lateley. Ever since he'd moved out here it had been constant work and taking orders, not a single interesting person to talk to. Course, Jake didn't do much of the socializing work, that was Sams job. People often came to the ranch looking for jobs, wanting advice or to look at the horses, and it was never Jake that dealt with them.with a sigh he ran his hand through his thick, short black hair, looking over the sweat glazed from of the young stallion he'd just taken around the track. He was able to get most of the gear off without any trouble, but as he was reaching to take the racing bridle off to replace it with a more simple, comfortable one, he was rewarded with a bite to the hand and the horse ripping away from him to trot triumphantly with no lead while Jake grabbed his hand and hissed. " Urgh! I hate arabians! Arrogant, obnoxious, tempemental jerks!" He called int eh prancing silver horses direction as he nursed his hand. The skin had not broke, but the pressure had been serious and the inward ache was enough to cause his temper to flare.

Amy walked over to her horse. She had already gotten him saddled and ready for his morning exercise. ”So boy what do you want to do today?” She said in a light tone as she scratched behind Thor’s left ear. ”Well, since we did jumping before we left, want to try come racing on for size?” Amy laughed a little when Thor let out an excited whinny; it was almost like he understood what she was saying. ”Yes I know you don’t race, but hell let’s try!” She smiled at him before walking over to the tack rack and grabbing a different halter and saddle. ”Well boy, let’s just switch you up and get on our way.” As Amy started switching his tack Thor stood ridged still, it had taken Amy a while to get him to do so, but when you own a horse for its whole life it tends to learn things just for the pleasure of doing something for you. As she walked over to his head after she finished his saddle she leaned her head against his head lightly. ”Oh boy, I’m sure glad I got to bring you with me.” Still smiling she switched his halter and walked to his side. ”Well boy, are you ready to try something new?” Thor through his head up as if to say ‘yes’ and let out a whinny. ”Well of course you are.” Amy let out a laugh as she swung her leg up and over Thor.
***
As she approached the gate that led into the race track she swung herself off Thor. Grabbing his lead rope she walked him over to it. ”Let go have some fun buddy.” She said smiling at him. She didn’t really know why she always smiled at him but for some reason he always made her smile. And it was something that no other boy had really done to her. ”You’re the only boy I need in my life, aren’t you boy.” She let out a laugh when Thor bobbed his head up and down. ”Glad you agree with me. Oh what would I do without out?” Lifting her head she rubbed his face. ”You like that don’t you, boy.” Still bobbing his head Thor let out a whinny." Yes, defiantly. Ready to go burn off some unneeded energy, then after maybe we could go over some jumps, yeah? That would be fun, of course they would have to easy jumps, don’t want to over work you, now do we boy?” Turning away from Thor she unlocked the gate and walked him through. Dropping the lead knowing he wouldn’t go anywhere she walked back to the gate and closed it again. As she walked back over to Thor the sound of pounding hooves reached her ears. ”I wonder who that is. Maybe we should come back later.” Amy pondered. ”Nah, let’s go, maybe we could race then. See how bad we are.” She laughed as she swung back up and on Thor’s back.
As she got Thor to go into a trot, she realized she was very wrong. Once she had the track in view she saw a dapple grey stallion running off. Looking around she saw a guy standing holding his hand and yelling after the stallion. Amy laughed. ”Well boy, I think someone just got bit and may need our help. How bout we use that bit of Western training to help us.” After saying that Amy clicked her tongue off her checks and Thor shot out. Since the dapple gray stallion was only trotting it wasn’t too hard to catch up with him, it would be the actual catching of him that would be harder. Amy slowed Thor to a trot thinking of how she could get this horse, he appeared to have no lead on. Frowning she looking down at the rope that just hung off Thor’s back. ”Looks like we are using a lead for something it shouldn’t be used for.” She laughed a little as she tied the rope in the way it should be in order to catch horses. Taking a deep breath she started spinning the rope in the air, she wasn’t usually good at this so she just hoped that this time she would get it on her first try. Clicking her tongue again Thor picked up pace just as the other horse did. ”Okay boy, steady, steady.” As soon as she saw her first chance she went for it. As she threw the rope it looked like she missed that horse, but somehow the rope landed around the horse’s neck. ”Wow, boy, we did it!” But as she said this the horse started bucking and neighing. ”Okay Thor I’m giving him to you.” Tying the rope to Thor she started making him walk backwards. It took a lot of work but finally she made it back to the boy.
As she slid off Thor she grabbed the lead rope that was holding the dapple stallion. Walking over to the boy she laughed a little because he was still holding his hand. ”I think this horse belongs to you. You know you should be more careful, you could have really gotten hurt.” She said this with this a straight face but there was laughter in her eyes. Holding out her head with the lead rope holding his horse she waited for him to take it. ”I’m Amy, by the way.” She said smiling at him. He would be the first person she met in this small town and she just hoped he wasn’t an ass.

Jake Wiley
With his bitten hand still cradled in his other hand he glared off after the dappled arabian thoroughbred cross, a scowl plain on his face for all to see. Jake was a bit of a hot head with a vacabulary that could, at times, resemble that of a trucker. Now this wasn't to say Jake was a complete lost cause as far as social skills went, but he still had a ways to go, so when a girl on a painted horse casually zipped by after Bullet, a hushed string of cursing was followed shortly after. Jake hated being shown up, be it by person or horse, and though Samantha said that bullet just had a sense of humour, the raven haired boy was beginning to think the horse just had it out for him, and that wasn't going to go over to well with Jake. And now on top of his cousins horse, he'd have to deal with the smart ass who caught him, and wouldn't you know it, the rider was a girl, just lovley! No one gave better speeches on 'how it's important to look after your four legged friends' than a girl, so when she finally roped in the hostile horse, Jake crossed his arms, much like a disapointed parent would, and waited for the girl to set her mount at a stop.Bullet the whole time had been pulling anxiously in the other direction, but now that they were at a stop, he was beginning to take an interest int he girls horse, something that imidiatly snapped Jake from his flustered glare.
Bullet came to a rigid stand still, his neck arching, pulling his head up high and close to his body.Beneath his pelt his taut muscle shivered, and atop his silver crown his ears fluctuated between falling flat and standing up.Jake knew this look, and wasted no time stepping up to place himself between the two horses. Though Jake, who always looked a horse over when in his presence, could tell the painted male was gelded, Bullet could not, and his nutural agression was clearly starting to show. This was one of the reasons they hadn't actually race him yet, because the three practices they'd had with Chris' stallion Rutt and a neighboring gelding had ended in near tradgedy. The first time Bullet hadn't made it fully out of the gates before he charged the gelding, and in the second race Rutt took a fall, leaving him on pasture recovery for nearly a year. There were definantly a lot of kinks in the young male to work out.
"Thanks," Jake muttered as he forced Bullet to look away from the girls mount, hastily clipping the halter and lead he'd planned to put on before, into place. "But you should be the one being more careful. Bullets not to fond of other males, almost took one of our own out two falls ago. No gaurentee he won't try the same with yours." Since then Rutt had recovered, and now he took his place hurdeling over jumps and racing along paths just like he used to. As Jake made to lead Bullet away, he gave a hasty pull in the other horses direction, where his neck outstretched in an attempt to nip at his rescuers."Cut it out!" He said as he quickly lead him off into a series of small circles. It was a well known fact that Bullet had a short attention span, a trait that came with his extra bundles of energy. In just moments he would forget there was even another horse here....
When the lean, muscular horses body finally relaxed, losing it's agressive posture, Jake led him to the closest rail, which coincedently left Bullet with his back turned to the girl and gelding. After tying him off, Jake turned back to the girl, striding over with cool steps. "Thanks again, names Jake." Noting that his good hand still had a bit of sweat, he sheepishly wiped it off on his blue jeans before offering it too her. Nice mount you've got there, you compete?" As he was looking the horse over, he couldn't help but wonder what they were doing on a race track, and his expression probably reflected that question. The horse, though clearly fast and sure footed, didn't look like it belonged anywhere near a race track. After a moment Jake was about to ask why they weren't at the jumping ring just down the road, but he held his tongue, deciding against it.After all, this was what he'd wanted, wasn't it, someone aside from his cousins to talk to? for now, he would try not to ruin it.
NOT DONE!

As the boy took the rope from her hands Amy looked around, there wasn’t really much to look at, some tack the race track but other than that nothing else really. She sighed, this town was so small, and she was use to bigger places with way more ranches then just one. She didn’t even really know why she decided to move here, maybe it was ‘cause it wasn’t too far from her parent’s house, well that was something they wanted really Amy couldn’t have cares less if she was far away from her parents. Truthfully she probably would have liked it better. She wasn’t one of those kids who wanted to be at their parent’s side all through life, she really had wanted to move out to some huge ranching country. But of course her parents were all ”But how will we see you on holidays and what if you need help with money or if you need to move back in with us?” And Amy knew that it would be pointless and impossible for her to make them change their minds and let her move far, far away. So she settled for this little community since it was as far as they would let her move away from them. That did piss her off a bit, but in her luck it was far enough so that no one from her old town would come down and visit her.
She hadn’t really made any ‘friends for a life time’ down in her old home, so leaving wasn’t that hard. Of course she made all those false promises of “oh, we’ll stay in touch and we’ll visit you every time we have the chance. “ It made her laugh a bit at how foolish people could be and also how gullible they are. But that’s the human race for you. All lies and promises being broken every day like they mean nothing at all. But really the only person that she never ever wanted to see again was Alex, her immature ex-boyfriend that she was going to break up with anyway but used the excuse of moving away and not wanting a long distance relationship instead of just coming out with it and says she didn’t want to see him anymore. And Amy was sure that that was what he was going around and telling people, but all their friends knew that she just didn’t want to be with him anymore, and they all agreed that it was best just to let him believe that moving away was the reason. Amy could only hope that he would find someone else and leave her the hell alone. Just then she remembered that she hadn’t gotten her phone number changed. ”Shit.” She said under her breath that meant that she had no reason not to answer or phone him back if he called. In her head she was running through things she could say to him, but she was pulled back into the real world when the guy's voice came again.
”Yeah, I’ll be more careful next time.” She knew she wouldn’t be, she never really thought things out before doing or saying tem, so she was sure she probably wouldn’t be more careful but oh well. Turning to Thor she patted his neck. ”Looks like you should probably get me gelded, he might calm down a bit for you. “ Amy watched as he led the horse around in circles till he calmed down. As he walked back over Amy was slightly amused when he wiped his hand on his jeans. Accepting his hand she said. ”Nice to meet you Jake.” Dropping his hand she let her vision wander to his horse then back to him, he didn’t really look like he should be racing but then again he could have just been exercising the horse. ”Thanks, yours too. And yeah I show jump and do some Western, what about you?” Amy laughed when a look crossed his face, looking something like wonder. ”To answer your unspoken question, I decided to try something new, just to see if Thor here liked running. Just for fun really. I was going to head to jumping area after a quick run around here. But then thing all happened.” She laughed a bit and then smiled at him. ”Your horse sure has a lot of spunk, guessing he’s a youngster?”

Jake Wiley
”Looks like you should probably get me gelded, he might calm down a bit for you. “
Jake had to smile at that. The day Bullet had been brought to the ranch he had suggested the exact same thing, and he was sure his horse Desert Rose had agreed, as he'd done nothing but harass her the whole time." Already suggested it, but Sam says it would be a waste. She wants to use him as a stud when he retires, that is, if she ever gets him to race properly. There was no doubt in Jakes mind that the Arabian Thoroughbred horse could win thousands in his time, if only Sam could figure out how to get him to relax without gelding him. He had to admit, the dappled stud had come a long way from what he was the day he arrived. He still harassed the other males, chased the mares around, and didn't let just any climb into the saddle, but he no longer lunged over the gate at a passer by, or paced and kicked the stall. Chris had though Bullet would never break his pacing, and they were all suprised at how fast and suddenlt it had stopped. He was definantly getting better, it was just a matter of how much better he'd get that would determine what happened with him.
Her next set of words confirmed his assumption, a jumping horse, with some obvious western thrown in as seen when she'd roped Bullet. Jake himself was familiar with Western, probably more so than any other discipline, but it wasn't often he competed. No, he saved such skills for the real life stuff, catching horses. It took patience, determination, and a firm hand to catch and control a wild horse, one wrong move and you'd lose everything. But she was right, what about him?"Well to be honest it's my Cousins Sam and Chris who do the competing around here. Sams great with horse behavior and trains a large portion of the horses that come through here, and Chris is a master Showman in almost everything, save racing. He says there's no grace in the sport." A most complimentary smirk took his lips after this as he pictured himself only minutes before, running Bullet. It had been anything but graceful, almost tragic in a humorus sense, and definantly not elegant."I deal with the unbroken stock that comes in. The ranch was built here 'cuz of the high wild horse population, and i'm the one that ropes 'em and breaks them in every year. Bullets not even my horse, he's my cousin Samantha, usually she's the one that gives him his work out, as you can see i'm clearly not built for racing any type of horse."
He gave a glance back to the silver male, eyes narrowing as the young horse attempted to angle his body at a position where he could glare at the trio standing to his back. ”To answer your unspoken question, I decided to try something new, just to see if Thor here liked running. Just for fun really. I was going to head to jumping area after a quick run around here. But then thing all happened.” He gave a silent nod to show he'd understood, just further more proof of what he'd already come to.”Your horse sure has a lot of spunk, guessing he’s a youngster?” Jakes jaw clenched at the words, not noticably, but none the less irritated."Yeah, just three. The man who had him before us screwed him pretty bad. He's got more energy than the average horse his age and breed should. The horse specialist told the guy he'd have to keep Bullet on a strict excersize scheduale, one that he didn't care to meet. After that the poor colt started having problems, and after the guys kid got kicked he wanted Bullet turned into dog food, Sam wouldn't let it happen. She bought for twice what he was worth, just to keep the old man happy." Despite Jakes obvious problem with the young, restless three year old, it was plain to see that if he had it his way, nothing would truley come to harm the horse.Jake was stern, maybe even a little hot headed, saying things he didn't mean, but he'd never send a horse to it's death, couldn't.
Looking to get his mind off of things, Jake sent a look back to Bullet before letting his gaze settle on Amy. " You mind if I watch you take him around once? I've never seen a jumper take on a race track before." He said with a grin, curious as to how a horse would work on such unfamiliar ground.

”Ha, Thor was just like him, till of course my parents forced me to get him fixed. They didn’t like it too much when he threw me off and I almost cracked my head.” Amy laughed a bit, every time she thought about it she always ended up giggling a little. At the time Amy blamed herself and really she still did. She always thought it was her own fault for pulling back on the reins to hard and for not wearing the proper helmet. But of course her parent’s saw it a very different way. Amy never really found it right to make a stallion a gelding it kind of seemed to her like she was taking a part of them away, that they needed or wanted. ”Yeah, I was going to us him for breeding too, though I doubt it would have gotten far, Thor didn’t come from any fancy bloodlines. People seem to think horses need to come from prize winning horses in order for them to be able to win medals. I never really have got that.” She shook her head a little; her mom had always wanted to buy Amy some champion bloodline horse. Amy of course had wanted just a normal horse, just to see if she could make a champion out of him. All champions had to come from somewhere after all, didn’t they? It had taken a lot to convince her mom to let her get a normal breed horse, since her mom always wanted the best even if it was way more than they could afford. And most of the time the things she wanted were just that; way too much money. Though he father always made sure that her mom got what she wanted, no matter what. But Amy was pretty sure that was just to make sure no fights happened.
”Now, I’m no horse expert so I really have no other ideas to give you about getting him to calm down, unless you want to get some natural calming pill and give it to him.” Even as Amy gave him her only other idea that she could give she seriously doubted that his cousins would even consider it. Thor nudged her obviously inpatient. ”We’ll go get you your exercise later. Jeez after the exercise I gave him later you would think he would want to be a lazy ass today.” She said shaking her head a bit well laughter filled her brown eyes. Really besides her father he was the only boy that she had truthfully loved; so far in her life. And in a way Amy thought Thor knew it, it was something in the way his eyes seemed to really look into her soul. And when they rode it was like they were one person, and that was really all Amy wanted in her horse. It never mattered after winning for her, she only wanted a friendship and that was exactly what she got.
”I would say I know who you are talking about, but I really have no idea.” She smirked at him. ”I must say I agree with him, I have never been drawn to racing. Well maybe I was a one point, my parent’s might have just shut down the idea and turned me to show jumping, since that in the only sport they like.” She never really got her parents and highly doubted she ever would. ”Ha, I guess I should have done my research on this place before moving here. So, you’re the cowboy of the bunch?” She asked smirking at him again, she had always been drawn to cowboy something about them just seemed appealing to her. ”Personally I’ve never really wanted to try and catch a wild horse, plus I would probably fail quite badly.” She said laughing a bit at the image that popped into her head. It would be quite amusing to maybe try to catch one just for the fun of it, of course she wouldn’t keep it, but it may be fun to try.
”Some people are so stupid, just wanting to own a horse for the hell of it and not put the work into it. I would have probably done the same thing as your cousin.” She said nodding her head slowly, as he said what had happened to the stallion. ”Well, if the problems were caused by humans there is always the hope humans can change it.” Hope being the key word there. Some horses just can’t be helped and that as the sad part.
”Yeah, sure why not, though this will probably be the only time I’ll ever take him around a track. I’m not even sure why I want to do this now.” She grinned back at him. ”Now no laughing.” She warned. ”I’m a little tall for racing and having only seen my brother do this.” Turning to Thor she patted his head. ”Let’s go boy. She whispered as she swung her leg over his back. Grabbing up his reins she turned him toward the track. ”I’m only going to do half the track, since I do want to talk him over some jumps today. “ Plus she thought, she didn’t want to risk him hurting his legs. Leading him over to the starting gates she took a deep breath and sat forward in the way racers sat or well stood. Are you ready boy?” She whispered in his ear before clicking her tongue and having him basically shoot out from under her. Amy could tell that racing was odd for him, the way his legs moved over the dirt seemed odd to both of them. But the good thing was Thor seemed to be really enjoying himself. His neck was stuck out in front of him and his tail flowing out behind him.
When they crossed the half track mark she slowed him down slowly. ”What a good boy.” Though she wasn’t sure how odd they looked or really how fast Thor had gone, though Amy judged it wasn’t as fast as the thoroughbreds go on this track. But then again it would have been very odd if he did. Letting out the breath that she had been holding in fro probably way longer than normal she turned Thor around and started the trot back to Jake. Once she got back to him and didn’t get off Thor. ”Well, at least I can say he liked running.” She said laughing a bit as she patted Thor on and neck. ”You really are a great boy aren’t you.” She whispered to him, though she was sure Jake could have picked up at least some of the sentence.
